New Media for Youth Engagement This project Wiki is being used before and after a learning event/conference called 'New Media for Youth Engagement'. The conference was organised by Eden District Council and was held on Monday 29th June 2009 between 10.00am and 4.00pm in the George Hotel, Devonshire Street, Penrith CA11 7SU.
The key goal of the event was to provide opportunities for professionals who deliver services to young people, including Cumbria County Council, the six District Councils and the Parish Councils in Cumbria, third sector organisations, community groups, NHS, Police, CDRP and representatives from schools in Cumbria to come together, learn about and debate potential for youth engagement using new media, social reporting techniques and on-line networking. The Conference programme details the presentations from key organisations and parallel workshops in the afternoon, followed by questions and answers.
Prior to the Conference, around 500 young people took part in a series of SkateJam events at the Skateboard Park in Penrith. A small number of young people were recruited with the help of Young Cumbria and Bluejam to act as 'digital reporters and new media editors. Using a variety of new media, they helped capture the essence of the day and other young people's views about the SkateJam. Results were uploaded to a demonstration website, Eden Media www.edenmedia.org.uk set up in a short space of time using free and low cost software. Both the website and training were facilitated by Steve Thompson of the Digital Innovation Unit, Teesside University.
During the conference, Steve illustrated how new media technologies can be used to create and publish content easily and cheaply.
Tim Davies, a UK expert in youth engagement/participation led some of afternoon workshops and panel discussion. Tim provided feedback from the day to help support future developments.
Arrangements for the Conference and the demonstration project were managed by Anna Malina, Consultation Officer, Eden District Council (EDC). The Conference was funded by the Cumbria Improvement and Efficiency Partnership (CIEP). More information from Anna on 01768 21 2164 (Mondays and Tuesdays) or 01900 823685 at other times. eMail: anna.malina@eden.gov.uk
